Healthy Apps to Inspire a Healthy Lifestyle

These days, there is an app for practically everything imaginable. Smart phones are integrated into our lives, so it’s understandable that apps try to address every aspect of our lifestyles.

Health and fitness is no different. In fact, health and fitness apps are making it considerably easier for people to embrace healthy living. If you’re interested in becoming healthier, here are five healthy apps to help you get on your way.

Healthy Apps #1. Nike Training Club

Can’t get a personal trainer? Consider getting one of the best healthy apps called Nike Training Club instead. This free app provides women with personal training right at their fingertips, offering more than 114 custom-built workouts for any fitness goal.

The app breaks up goals into four main categories–Get Lean, Get Toned, Get Strong, Get Focused–and offers numerous workouts in each. You can choose Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced workouts depending on your level of fitness.

The app provides video instructions, audio coaching to guide users, and tracks workout history. It gives rewards, which helps you unlock bonus workouts, and you can listen to music while using the app. The app is available for both Android and iOS platforms.

Healthy Apps #2. RunKeeper

This free running app received Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s ringing endorsement this past fall at TechCrunch Disrupt San Francisco. RunKeeper, which is available for both Android and iOS platforms, uses your phone’s GPS to track your outdoor workouts.

It monitors and stores the calories burned, distance, pace, as well as time spent walking, running, biking, or hiking. A

As for the workouts themselves, you can either choose one of the app’s running and training routines or customize their own interval workout.

Like Nike Training Club, RunKeeper is one of the funnest healthy apps and lets you listen to music while exercising. And for those that need someone in their ear keeping them on target, RunKeeper has audio cues that remind you to pick up the pace when necessary.

Yoga Apps #3. Pocket Yoga

If you want to address mind and body health, Pocket Yoga can be your personal yoga guide. This $2.99 app allows you to set your own pace while learning and mastering yoga skills at home.

The app has visual and voice instruction to help you through the more than 150 poses featured. The pose illustrations show proper posture and positioning, and a dictionary describes each pose and its benefits.

As part of your development, Pocket Yoga tracks practices to help you monitor your progress. If you want to view the practice on a larger screen, you can connect your iPad, iPhone, or iPod to a TV.

Pocket Yoga also lets users listen to music of their choice while practicing. This is one of the most useful healthy apps and is only available for the iOS platform.

Food Apps #4. Fooducate

Curious about your food’s nutritional value? Using an algorithm developed by nutritionists and dieticians that analyzes ingredients and nutrients amongst other elements, Fooducate assigns letter grades to all food items.

Foods can receive anything from an A to a D, and the algorithm favors minimally processed, nutrient rich foods over heavily processed, fortified foods.

To use the app, simply scan the product’s bar code and a grade will appear telling you the pros and cons of the food.

The app also provides healthier alternatives for you to eat, daily tips, and current events and public health policy coverage. This free app is available for both Android and iOS platforms.

Weigh Loss Apps #5. Lose It

Losing weight can be hard. Lose It helps you realize your weight loss goals by setting up a personalized weight loss plan that has a calorie budget, tracks exercise, and monitors nutrition.

The app then reminds you to record your food intake and exercise. As part of its role in your weight loss journey, Lose It offers a database filled with healthy food options and activities.

The app also has a bar code scanner that lets you learn more about the packaged foods you eat. The free app is available on both Android and iOS platforms as well as Kindle, NOOK, and the web.

What kind of healthy apps do you use on your smart phone to maintain a healthy lifestyle?
